Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad

Shab-e-Barat is actually a Muslim religious festival widely observed on the night of 15 Shaban that falls under the Hegira calendar. Like other Islamabad Festivals and Events, Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad is too observed with great funfair. The word Shab-e-Barat is actually derived from the Persian word ‘shab’ which means night and ‘barat’ which religiously refers to 'the night of commission or assignment'. This festival is celebrated with great pomp and splendor in all over the world which has a considerable Islamic population. Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad is equally observed with much funfair and equal zest. It’s during this festival that the whole of the city accuquires a grand festive look with brightly illuminated buildings and streets. Celebration of Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad is held on the 13th or 14th day of the month of Shaban which is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar.

Shab-e-Barat events in Islamabad are aimed at providing not only fun and frolic to the younger ones but it’s also the time when the elders go for deep religious introspection as many believe it’s the night of good fortune. Hectic preparations are marked before the arrival of Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad with people cleaning their households, buying new clothes and making arrangements for lavish family feasts.



It’s important to note that while you visit different regions of Pakistan, you would witness different traditional ways of observing Shab-e-Barat as there are varied ethnic groups present mostly in the rural areas of the country. As in some parts of the country, it’s widely known as ‘Boraks Nigh’. The day is usually marked with colorful firework displays held at large playgrounds of the city.

Like Ramadan in Islamabad, there are many interesting features of Shab-e-Barat in Islamabad. One such religious activity which is whole heartedly participated by the citizens of Islamabad is the charity works which includes distribution of clothes, foods and other necessary items to the poor and needy people.
It’s also the perfect time to remember the forefathers of ones family and thereby people prepare especially cooked dishes like vermicelli and sweets in their honor which is later feasted by the whole family.

Shab-e-Barat festivities in Islamabad remain incomplete without mentioning about the beautiful decorations which adorn each and every house of the city. People widely deck up their houses with flowers and lights.
