Pakistan felt the need to build a new and permanent Capital City in order to be able to reflect the cultures, traditions, hopes, aspirations and dreams of all diverse ethics, linguistic and regional group that constituted the country. In 1958 a commission was set up and entrusted with the task of looking for a suitable site for the National Capital. The commission emphasized on certain factors like location, climate, logistic, defence requirements, aesthetics, scenic and natural beauty.
An extensive research had been conducted for this. The commission also conducted a feasibility study and finally after a thorough review of various sites, it decided on the Northeast of Rawalpindi. You will find from the interesting history of Islamabad that after this location was decided, there was no turning back. Finally with the dedicated hardwork of the technical experts and of course the Pakistani engineers there began a new city, a new destination in Pakistan – Islamabad. It eventually absorbed Rawalpindi and gradually stretched well to the West of Grand Trunk Road.
