Located in the Pothohar Plateau in the north west of Pakistan, Islamabad is referred to as the capital city even if the area has been a part of the Punjab region and the North West Frontier Province. The Margalla pass has been a gateway to the North-West Frontier Province, and the Pothohar Plateau been a part of Punjab. It is located at 33°40'N 73°10'E. The Islamabad population sees a majority of Punjabis and the rest is constituted by others.
The new Capital city nestles against the backdrop of the Margalla Hills at the northern end of Pothowar Plateau. The well planned geography of Islamabad divides the city in to 8 basic zones – administrative, diplomatic enclave, residential areas, educational sectors, industrial sectors, commercial areas, rural and green areas. Each area has a shopping center of its own. The modern capital Islamabad and the ancient Gakhar city of Rawalpindi stand side by side, displaying the country’s past as well as the present.

The estimated population of Pakistan was over 162.4 million in 2005. The relatively high growth rate in the population has, however, been showing signs of slowing down. Dramatic social changes have led to a rapid urbanization of mega cities that correlates with a global trend sometimes referred to as social globalization. The country has a multi cultural society and hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Pakistan from all over the world.
In the northern half most of the population in Pakistan lives about an arc formed by cities of Faisalabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Peshawar. The estimated population in Islamabad includes Punjabis who account for 65% of the total population. Besides the Punjabis, the Mujahir Urdu forms 10%, Pashtun is at 10% again and the rest 15% is constituted by others like Sindhi, Balochi, Kashmiris etc.
The scenery at Islamabad is spectacular. The breathtaking mountains with its entire majestic stature make for lovely viewing. The beautiful geography of Islamabad also includes the 12th highest peak which is again a part of the Karakuram Range in Pakistan.

You will find that the city had been planned extremely well from the very beginning. With plenty wide tree lined streets, large houses, elegant public buildings and well organized bazaars or shopping centers there was freshness all around. A study shows you how the city has come into being keeping in mind the convenience of the civilization that would develop there.
